Jazz Pianist Ga-Young Bae’s Second Full Album
Gugak and Jazz on Canvas Live Album – Korean Traditional Music, Jazz, and Live Painting Ga-Young Bae’s first album Sepia Painting captivated audiences by weaving together jazz and Korean traditional music with a sense of naturalness, flexibility, and unrestrained imagination. The album was nominated at the 18th Korean Music Awards (KMA Awards), gaining recognition for its inventive crossover approach.
Her new project, Gugak and Jazz on Canvas Live Album, expands on that vision by combining newly composed crossover works with previous pieces. Recorded and filmed live in one space, the project also incorporates a live painting performance, bringing vivid immediacy to the album. Notably, the album features collaborations with pansori singer Hwang Ae-ri and painter Hye-rin Kim, whose contributions add even greater color and energy to the music.
Although rooted in jazz, this is not a simple fusion project. Without relying on Korean traditional instruments, the music nevertheless captures the spirit and rhythms of gugak through the language of jazz. Improvisation and jazz phrasing breathe new life into traditional elements, creating a balanced interplay of melody and rhythm. The addition of pansori’s narrative recitation (aniri) and lyrics lends the music an even more direct emotional resonance.
The album closes with Bridge, inspired by a speech by former UN Ambassador Oh Joon, which addresses North Korea’s human rights issues and the pain of national division. Delivered with restraint and honesty, the piece evokes deep empathy and leaves a lasting impression.

‘Gugak and Jazz on Canvas Live Album’ 국악, 재즈 그리고 라이브페인팅
작위적이지 않고 자연스러움과 유연함, 자유분방한 상상력이 더해진 연주로 재즈와 국악을 흥미진진하게 크로스오버시킨 배가영의 1집 앨범 ‘Sepia Painting’은 제18회 한국대중음악상(KMA Awards)에 노미네이트되며 대중들에게 어필한 한 바 있다.
‘Gugak and Jazz on Canvas Live Album’은 이에 이어 국악과 재즈를 크로스오버한 신곡들과 기존 곡들을 조합하여 한 공간에서 음원 녹음과 비디오 촬영, 라이브 페인팅 퍼포먼스까지 더해 생생한 현장감을 담은 라이브 앨범이다. 특별히 판소리에 황애리 씨와 라이브 페인팅에 김혜린 작가까지 참여하여 더욱 색채감 있고 현장감 넘치는 음악을 대중에게 전달한다.
재즈로 해석한 국악이지만 재즈의 언어로 국악기를 사용하지 않으면서도 국악의 정서와 리듬을 효과적으로 구현한다는 점에서 여타 국악 퓨전 작품과 다른 혁신적인 재즈 앨범이다. 즉흥연주와 재즈의 언어를 활용해 국악을 연주함으로 선율과 리듬이 조화롭게 어우러진다. 이번 앨범에는 특별히 판소리의 아니리와 가사를 통해 내용을 직관적으로 전달함으로 더욱 음악에 대한 공감을 불러일으키는 앨범이다. 특별히 마지막 수록곡 ‘Bridge’는 전 UN 오준 대사의 연설을 모티브로 북한의 인권 문제와 분단의 아픔을 표현한 곡으로 담백한 연주로 더욱 공감을 불러일으키는 곡이다.

A Cinematic Encounter of Gugak and Jazz
Debut Album – Sepia Painting by Jazz Pianist Ga-Young Bae
Sepia Painting consists of five original compositions, each with its own story to tell. Compact in form—five to six minutes each—these pieces unfold like short films, inviting visual imagination and evoking a synesthetic experience through sound.
Drawing inspiration from Korean rhythmic cycles such as Jungjungmori Jangdan and Yeongnam Garak, as well as folk songs like Boat Song, Bae weaves together jazz and Korean musical colors with depth and sensitivity. The result is a resonant and uniquely Korean voice within the jazz tradition.
The title track, Sepia Painting, portrays a journey through time as if seated in a train’s backward-facing seat. Through the window, the listener revisits the past, encounters an earlier self, and returns to the present. Memories and fragments of bygone days reappear like reflections in a mirror—transformed into melodies that make distant recollections feel tangible once again.
Another highlight, Boat Boat Boat, takes its motif from the Korean folk song Boat Song and draws inspiration from J.M.W. Turner’s painting The Slave Ship. It reflects the arduous daily lives of fishermen, the toil of labor at sea, and the unpredictable force of nature. Melodic lines intertwined with tense rhythms conjure images of vast oceans, the hardship of seafaring life, and the sweeping, tempestuous surges of the sea—resonating with a striking sense of drama.
Ga-Young Bae’s debut album Sepia Painting was produced in 2020 with the support of the Arts Council Korea’s Cultural Promotion Fund.

국악과 재즈의 영화 같은 만남
신인 재즈피아니스트 배가영의 Sepia Painting
이번 앨범의 Sepia Painting은 5개의 자작곡으로 구성되어 있으며, 5개의 곡이 각기 다른 스토리를 가지고 이야기합니다. 앨범 각 수록곡은 5분, 6분이라는 짧은 연주곡으로 단편영화를 보는 듯한 시각적인 상상력을 음악속에 녹여 공감각 적인 형상이 연상됩니다.
한국의 장단(중중모리장단, 영남 가락)과 민요(뱃노래)를 모티브로 작곡된 곡들은 한국인 재즈 피아니스트로서 재즈와 한국적인 색깔을 조화롭게 표현하여 깊은 울림으로 다가옵니다. 앨범의 타이틀곡인 Sepia Painting은 기차의 역방향좌석에 앉아서 시간여행을 하는 이야기입니다. 창밖을 통해 자신의 옛 시절로 돌아가 과거의 자신을 만나고 다시 현재로 돌아온다는 거울같은 이야기를 음악으로 표현하였는데, 아련한 과거의 기억과 아름다운 추억을 한편의 멜로디로 표현함으로써 흩어진 아련한 조각들을 손에 잡힐 듯 다시 불러오는 곡입니다.
또다른 타이틀곡 Boat Boat Boat는 우리나라 민요 뱃노래를 모티브로 미술작품 J.M.W. Turner’s “The Slave Ship”의 영감을 받아 작곡된 곡입니다. 옛 어부들의 힘겨웠던 바다위의 일상과 조업 과정을 거친 멜로디와 함께 긴장감 있는 리듬으로 표현해 보았는데, 가도 가도 끝없는 망망대해, 고된 바다의 삶, 예측할 수 없는 자연의 변화무쌍한 휘몰아침이 음악을 통해 시각적으로 녹아들어 깊은 공명으로 울려옵니다.
배가영의 첫 앨범 Sepia Painting은 2020년도 한국문화예술위원회의 문화진흥기금을 지원받아 제작되었습니다.
