피아니스트 배가영은 국악, 재즈, 아프로-쿠반 리듬 등 다양한 전통 음악과 현대적 어법을 융합해 독창적이고 실험적인 사운드를 만들어가는 작곡가이자 연주자다.
버클리음대에서 CJ 장학금과 Asian Scholarship을 받아 학사 과정을 마쳤고, 석사 과정은 전액 장학생으로 수료했으며,
현재는 동덕여자대학교 실용음악과 박사과정에 재학 중이다.
그녀는 배가영 밴드를 이끌며 국악과 재즈를 결합한 정규 앨범 두 장을 발표했고, 1집 Sepia Painting은 한국대중음악상 크로스오버 부문 후보작으로 주목받았다. 또한OH!JUHA(오주하) 프로젝트에서는 판소리와 재즈 피아노를 기반으로 보다 대중적인 음악을 선보였다.
최근에는 자신의 부캐 Mango Rita(망고리타)를 통해YouTube와 인스타그램 릴스에서 몬투노 연주 영상과 악보 콘텐츠를 제작·공유하며 라틴 리듬의 매력을 알리는 활동을 이어가고 있다.
현재 동덕여자대학교, 동서울대학교, 강릉원주대학교에서 실용음악을 가르치고 있으며, 오종대의 OBAND(오뺀), 이정식 밴드 등에서 사이드맨으로도 활동 중이다. 또한 미국 재즈 씬에서도 다양한 뮤지션들과 협연하며, 여러 국제 재즈 페스티벌에도 참가한 바 있다.
Pianist GaYoung Bae blends traditional Korean music, jazz, and Afro-Cuban rhythms to create a distinctive and exploratory sound that crosses genres and cultures.
She earned her bachelor’s degree from Berklee College of Music with support from the CJ Scholarship and the Asian Scholarship, and completed her master’s degree there on a full scholarship.
She is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Contemporary Music Performance at Dongduk Women’s University in Seoul.
As the leader of the GaYoung Bae Band, she has released two full-length albums combining Korean traditional music with jazz.
Her debut album, Sepia Painting, was nominated for Best Crossover Album at the Korean Music Awards.
She also leads the duo project OH!JUHA, where she presents a more accessible, singer-songwriter approach by fusing pansori (Korean traditional vocal storytelling) with jazz piano. The project has released eight singles to date.
Recently, Bae has been actively performing under her alternate persona Mango Rita,
sharing short-form montuno performances and sheet music on Instagram Reels and YouTube, introducing audiences to the vibrant rhythms of Afro-Cuban music in a fresh and playful way.
In addition to her solo and collaborative projects, she teaches jazz and contemporary music at Dongduk Women’s University, Dong Seoul University, and Gangneung-Wonju National University.
She is also an active sideman, performing with groups such as Oh Jong-dae’s OBAND, Lee Jung-sik Band, and Kim Hee-na Band.
Her international career includes collaborations with musicians in the U.S. and appearances at major jazz festivals around the world.
